When a litter of five kittens arrived at IndyHumane, volunteers sprang into action, providing round-the-clock care while searching for their mom.
At about two weeks old, the kittens had the best chance of survival under their mother’s care. While volunteers ensured they were fed, clean, and loved, efforts to reunite them with their mom continued.
A few days later, everyone at the rescue breathed a sigh of relief when the mother cat was brought to safety.

When the cat was reunited with her kittens, she instantly recognized them and resumed her motherly duties.
The kittens were overjoyed to have their mom back, nursing contentedly side by side until they drifted off to the soothing sound of her purrs. “She is super sweet and very attentive to her little ones,” Jennifer, a volunteer with IndyHumane, shared.

Comfortably settled in her new nest, the mom, Birdie, spent days doting on her kittens and tending to their every need. “She already seems much more relaxed and is often purring while nursing her babies.”
With their mom by their side, the kittens (all boys) quickly gained weight and strength, reaching one milestone after another.

Birdie was an exceptional mother, always affectionate and patient. She made sure no one missed out on her love. “She’s also very trusting of me with her kittens, which makes helping her out so much easier.”

Even when Birdie needed a break, she didn’t stop caring for her young. “She never strays far from them. She has never gotten up on the cat tree where they can’t get to her. She usually wakes them up when it’s time to feed and potty them.”
She stayed close to her kittens until they grew strong, curious, and eager to explore beyond the nest.

When the kittens started showing interest in their mom’s food, they nibbled on the kibble but still preferred nursing. At five weeks old, they took their time learning to eat from a dish, and Birdie happily obliged whenever her kittens swarmed her.
She insisted on giving them mandatory baths, keeping them immaculately clean.

The kittens mastered the litter box with flying colors and soon began scampering around, exploring every corner of their spacious room. “It won’t be long until they figure out how to get to the higher platforms and start lounging in the window.”
They grew by leaps and bounds, having the time of their lives.

When the kittens (Lark, Sparrow, Finch, Wren, and Starling) were big enough to leave the nest, Birdie was ready to find her forever home. “She’s been so attentive and patient with her boys. She made my job easy.”
As the kittens became more independent, Birdie began playing with toys and finally ventured up the cat tree.

Just a few days ago, Birdie’s dream came true. “She found her forever home. Estimated to be three years old, she most likely had several litters of kittens. Now, she finally gets to be someone’s baby.”
Meanwhile, Lark, Wren, Finch, and Sparrow were adopted in pairs. Their brother, Starling, is ready for his happily ever after.
